HowTo – Enable Clipboard on VMware vSphere Client 4.1.x and later

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Hello,

sometimes you need to copy and paste some Information between your PC/Host and a Virtual Machine (VM). For e.g. on VirtualBox it is easy to active this, by edit the VM Settings -> General -> Advanced Tab and then change the option on “Shared Clipboard” and “Drag’n Drop”.
On VMware vSphere Client 4.1.x and later you had to change some Advanced Configuration Parameters. So I found the solution in VMware KB 1026437 .

Note: VMware Tools must be installed.

To enable Copy and Paste on a special VM follow this points:

  1. Log into the vCenter or ESXi Server and power off the VM
  2. Select the VM and select the Summary tab
  3. Edit Settings
  4. Navigate to Options -> Advanced General and click on the Configuration Parameters
  5. Now click Add Row
  6. Add these values in the Name and Value columns:
    1. .
      1. Name: isolation.tools.copy.disabled
      2. Value: FALSE
    2. .
      1. Name: isolation.tools.paste.disabled
      2. Value: FALSE

To enable Copy and Paste on an ESXi Host for all VMs:

  1. Log in to the ESXi Host over SSH as root user (SSH should be enabled)
  2. Make a copy of the file /etc/vmware/config (cp /etc/vmware/config /etc/vmware/config.backup)
  3. Open the file /etc/vmware/config with an text editor like vi
  4. Add the following lines to the end of the file:
    vmx.fullpath = “/bin/vmx”
    isolation.tools.copy.disable=”FALSE”
    isolation.tools.paste.disable=”FALSE”
  5. Now save and exit the file

DragandDrop-ESXi-config

Cheers,

Rolf
